Mission Statement

Our committee is concerned with:

Airfield and Airspace Capacity

 and the impacts on

Delay, and Aviation System Performance

We are dedicated to the development, evaluation and application of:

  • Improved techniques for analyses and measurement
  • Activities and Actions that increase airfield and airspace capacity and decrease delays.

In pursuing this mission we consider the institutional, financial, environmental, energy and air traffic control issues that affect airfield and airspace capacity and delay.

The committee promotes innovation and progress in capacity enhancement and delay reduction in the short, medium, and long term.

Short term actions promote more efficient and equitable use of existing capacity through air traffic management and improved resource allocation.

Medium term actions range from developing new procedures to airfield and airspace enhancements, including new runways and airports.

Long term actions focus on technological improvements that relax fundamental constraints on airspace and airfield capacity, such as separation requirements, minimum runway spacing, navigation precision, and tools that enhance controller capability.

Research Areas within the scope of AV060 include, but are not limited to:

  • Capacity and delay modeling methodologies

  • Procedures and technologies to optimize capacity

  • Procedures and technologies for reducing delay

  • Airport capacity and delay analysis

  • En route and terminal airspace analysis

  • Forecasting capacity and delay

  • Capacity and delay metrics

  • Increase predictability of NAS capacity and traffic demand to improve strategic Traffic Flow Management (TFM) decision-making. This includes research on:

  • probabilistic TFM

  • improving accuracy of predictions and reducing uncertainty in the NAS environment

  • Technological and operational advancements to minimize impact of weather and other adverse factors on all aspects of aviation activities (safety, efficiency, traffic flow management, airport and en-route operations, passenger service)

  • Taking into account environmental aspects while considering reduction in delays, increasing NAS capacity, expanding airport runway systems and enhancing route structures

  • Collaborative TFM/ATC involving various stakeholders in the strategic decision-making

  • Developing appropriate metrics for risk/benefit analysis of technological and operational impacts
